What does a workshop need for ADAS calibration after a windscreen replacement?

Many cars have a forward camera mounted on the windscreen, so replacing the glass can change what the camera sees. Carmakers usually require the camera to be calibrated afterwards, either with targets in the workshop (static), on a road drive (dynamic), or both. A workshop needs a level, well-lit bay, the right targets and frame, calibration software and the carmaker's procedure for each car.

Why does a windscreen replacement affect ADAS?

The camera for lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking and similar systems often sits behind the windscreen and looks through it. A new windscreen is never fitted at exactly the same angle to the micron, so the camera's view shifts slightly. Calibration tells the system where "straight ahead" is again. Many carmakers ask for it after a windscreen replacement, and the workshop should follow the procedure for the car in front of it.

Which other jobs can need ADAS calibration?

Windscreen work is the best-known trigger, but the carmaker's procedure may also call for calibration after:

• Bumper or grille repair radars and sensors behind or in the bumper can be knocked out of position.
• Wheel alignment or suspension work a changed thrust angle changes where the car points relative to the camera.
• Camera or radar removal or replacement the unit must be taught its new position.
• Collision repair body repairs near a sensor can change its mounting angle.

What is the difference between static and dynamic calibration?

Static calibration is done in the workshop: the car sits on a level floor and the camera is aimed at calibration targets placed on a frame at distances the carmaker specifies. Dynamic calibration is done on the road: the technician drives the car at set speeds on well-marked roads while the scan tool guides the process. Some cars need one method, some need both. The carmaker's procedure says which, so check it before quoting the job.

What does a workshop need to do it properly?

Ask your supplier to confirm each item for the cars you service:

• Space and floor a level, flat area large enough to place the frame and measure the distances the procedure calls for.
• Lighting even lighting without glare or strong reflections on the targets.
• Targets and frame the target set for the systems you calibrate, such as lane departure, surround view, rear radar, blind spot and night vision.
• Software and scan tool ADAS calibration software that matches the car brands you service, kept up to date.
• The carmaker's procedure the vehicle conditions it asks for, such as tyre pressure, fuel level and an alignment check, before you start.
